The Music Man

Like many of my high school friends, Terry found his way back to South Florida to help his family through a health care emergency.  Terry lives in Los Angeles and was in town last week helping his brothers who live here, care for his mother.

Terry is a musician with some excellent albums to his name and works as a studio musician and band leader for some highly recognized artists. He was also musical director for an ill-fated late night talk show a few years ago.

Within an extremely short period of time, Terry was able to make legal decisions, battle successfully with the hospital where his mother has been admitted, and put together a highly workable plan to coordinate his family’s caregiving efforts.

I asked him how he was able to accomplish so much in such a short period of time and he said it only became possible when he realized that caregiving was so very similar to the music business.
  1. It takes the entire band playing together to make beautiful music.
  2. Not everyone plays the same instrument well and not everyone has to play at the same time. Sometimes the small ting of a
cowbell at the right time is all that is needed for a piece to sound good.
  3. To make the best music, someone needs to lead the band.
