During lunch, a caregiver who was sitting next to
me spoke of her mother living with end-stage renal
failure who would not abide offers by her daughter
who was trying to get her out of the house.
Realizing she was getting nowhere with her mother,
she arranged for her mom’s friends to either stop
by, bring food or invite her to their homes, without
ever letting on that her daughter was behind the
concentrated effort to help with her depression.
Although there was a ton of advice being shared
during the conference session, the lesson came alive
for me that wherever and whenever you find yourself
around family caregivers, you are in the presence of
true healthcare experts and it pays to listen.
In fact, during the morning Q&A session, one
caregiver gave me the best answer I have ever heard
to the question “What gets you through the day?”
Her response: “Chocolate.”
Case closed.
