As a coincidental aside, in the
May/June issue of Today’s Caregiver magazine, we
interview Dr. Claude Wischik, world-renowned
Alzheimer’s researcher and proponent of the TAU
theory of Alzheimer’s causation, who talked about
the debt he owes to the families who have donated
brain tissue to help his research. He thought that
about 30 percent of the families would consent to
his request, but the number turned out to be closer
to 95 percent. Dr. Wischik says that he is always
conscious of their deep generosity and their acts of
kindness motivate him in a great way.
Like Dr. Wishick, I was greatly impressed with
the positive responses to the concept of utilizing
brain banks by the caregivers at yesterday’s event.
One thing I learned is that if you are considering
donating to a brain bank in your area, you need to
make plans in advance. Contact your
local Alzheimer’s Association for details.
