Gary Barg: Allison, tell me about the work of the CMT National Resource Center and their Hereditary Neuropathy Foundation.

Allison Moore: The Hereditary Neuropathy Foundation is the 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that I founded in 2001 after I ended up with severe onset of Charcot-Marie-Tooth. CMT is the number one inherited neuropathy. It is a progressive neuromuscular disease and can be extremely debilitating. The organization’s mission is to increase awareness, educate, support the community and fund research leading to treatments to halt, reverse and ultimately cure the many forms of Charcot-Marie-Tooth.

To date, we have funded well over a million dollars in research. We have a research model called Therapeutic Research and Accelerated Discovery which is a collaborative effort among academia, government and industry to develop treatments. We believe that there are hundreds of thousands of people walking around with this disease and they do not even know it, because the range of symptoms can be very mild to severe  ...more
