The Dr. Ruth Interview

Gary Barg: I’m very happy that we get a chance to talk about your book, Dr. Ruth’s Guide for Alzheimer’s Caregivers. I knew I was going to like it when I started reading and the first chapter is titled, “How to Help Yourself.” Why do you think that’s specifically important for Alzheimer’s caregivers?

Dr. Ruth: I’ll tell you why – because it’s not like when somebody has an operation. There’s a hospital stay, then there’s recovery, and then people can go on with their life. That’s not the case here because this is such a horrible disease. And it’s such a hopeless disease. So I decided I know how to do training of professionals from my years at Planned Parenthood and I said that’s what I have to use right now. Just to tell people that they must – without feeling bad and without feeling guilty – they must do something for themselves...read more

Helping From Far Away
By Kate Shuman

Because Americans have become such a transient culture, adult children are now finding themselves having to deal with an ever-growing crisis: taking on the new-found role as long-distance caregiver. A recent study on long-distance caregiving showed that the out-of-pocket expense of caring for an elderly or physically challenged loved one who lives more than an hour away has doubled since 1997...read more

What is Hospice?
By Jon Radulovic

Hospice seeks to “de-institutionalize” the dying experience and provide a more humane system of care for those who have received a terminal diagnosis of six months or less. The first hospice program in this country was opened in New Haven, Connecticut in 1972; this was based on the Hospice Model of Care developed by Dame Cicely Saunders at St. Christopher’s Hospice in Great Britain. Currently, there are over 3,000 hospices in the United States and Puerto Rico...read more

Holiday Help: Relieving Caregivers’ Stress
By Cheryl Smith

Who doesn’t feel overwhelmed sometimes by the bustle of the holiday season? Add to that the responsibility of caring for a frail elderly loved one, and burnout is simply a concept waiting to become reality. But wait. If you’re one of the 22 million households providing care for a family member or friend, there is hope...read more

Carenotes

We had our first experience last weekend with a hotel “handicapped” room.  They gave us a room with a roll in shower. The flat portion of the shower floor was only 14” wide, then a down ramp of a couple inches and a small drain.  There was another small drain on the bathroom floor, which was necessary because that is where much of the shower water went.  There was a bench in the shower. My husband (recovering from a stroke) is able to stand and shower, but his balance is not good enough for the narrow shower floor. The wet bathroom floor was “an accident waiting to happen.”  We decided to forgo his shower that morning.  Also, the chair in the bedroom was too low; he couldn’t  rise from it without help. Are all “handicapped” hotel rooms that way? We need to know what to look forward to in the future.
