If you were anywhere near television, radio, newspapers, the Internet, magazines and/or any other living human being, you know that this month was the official roll-out of the program known as ACA, or Affordable Care Act or even Obamacare. One major aspect of the ACA that you may be directly affected by is the opening of the health insurance marketplaces, run by the federal government or by the state (depending upon where you live).

The Health Insurance Marketplace is designed to make buying health coverage easier and more affordable. The Marketplace will allow individuals and small businesses to compare health plans, get answers to questions, find out if they are eligible for tax credits for private insurance or health programs like the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), and enroll in a health plan that meets their needs.

One other thing that has traditionally come into play whenever any new financial or insurance system is created is the potential for (what I would charitably call) fraudsters. So, here are a few tips to consider when pondering participating in the ACA...read more

Pink Ribbon Yoga is for Caregivers, Too
By Cheryl Ellis, Staff Writer

Finding stillness within is a perpetual challenge for caregivers and for their loved ones. Programs often focus on the individual with the health challenge; and while there are resources available for caregivers, it is special to find one that welcomes both caregiver and patient or loved one. Pink Ribbon Yoga, created by Corey Becker, RN, encourages patients, caregivers, and their extended support network to come together and de-stress...read more

The Nearest Doorknob
By Jane Hoppe

Wednesday’s red blouse and black jacket hang from the bathroom door’s inside knob. Thursday’s teal sweater and scarf hang from the bathroom door’s outside knob. My lavender jacket never made it into the front closet; it is still on that doorknob. Wednesday’s beige canvas tote bag and Thursday’s Monet’s Water Lilies tote bag remain suspended on my office doorknob...read more

Developing an Organized Medication System at Home

Caregivers can be overwhelmed with the number of medications that their loved ones need to take on a daily basis. This isn't a tip, but a message for all you caregivers out there. God bless you all for sacrificing your time to be so caring and selfless. Caregiving is the hardest job in the world, but God chose you to take care of your loved one because you are the only one that can do the job right. One day, life will become easier, and you will be richer for the countless days that you were always right there to take care of the sick and the elderly. “Life isn't measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.” [author unknown] God bless all caregivers!

One of the most underutilized doctors for seniors is the geriatric psychiatrist. A geriatric psychiatrist is a medical doctor with special training in the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders such as dementia, depression, anxiety, and late-life schizophrenia. My mother's doctor diagnosed her Alzheimer’s four years ago and turned her life around by prescribing the correct mix of medication to first lift and then treat depression, which she deals with now. He also monitors the progression of her Alzheimer's. I didn't even know these doctors existed until my friend told me about them. Highly recommend you find one in your area as soon as possible; best move I ever made. P.S. He has also become my psychiatrist and is treating me for my depression as the caregiver for my mother.
