Unexpected benefit to caregiving: Life-changing surprise for me when my mother's dementia caused her to become a child again. For the first time, I learned of her innocence, her fears, her untouched, core self. My mother, world traveler, socially dynamic and "pathologically optimistic" person, unwittingly shared her essence. It was the best gift I could have ever gotten because it healed so many wounds.
