Principle Ten
“I will fearlessly acknowledge when providing
care for my family member becomes impossible, either because of his or
her condition or my own, and seek other solutions for my family
member's care needs.”
This principle in the
Fearless Caregiver Manifesto relates to one of the most important
decisions you may be asked to make as a family caregiver—choosing an
appropriate long-term care facility for your loved one. With this
decision, you are not only selecting a safe and comfortable place in
which your loved one will live, but also a team of healthcare
professionals who will become your partners in care....read more

The Fine Line of Food
|
By Jennifer Bradley, Staff Writer
An etiquette every person is taught is to
never ask a woman her weight. For a woman diagnosed with
breast cancer, that is something she is asked often, and a
fact she is expected to track religiously. It’s a fine line to
walk—the need to maintain a healthy weight while combatting
the lack of appetite many cancer patients experience...read more

Creating Fun for Caregivers and Frail Seniors
By Lynn Howe

Your confined-to-home (or assisted
living or nursing home) parent, just wants to have
fun! You are focused on their safety, finances,
medical treatment, medications, privacy, nutrition and
therapy. You busy yourself with monitoring their
progress (or decline) and doing everything in your
power to keep them comfortable. You worry about their
reduced energy level, increasing fatigue, physical
weakness and variable mental status...read more

Functional Flexibility Activities for Older Adults
By Lori Peppi Michiel
|
For aging adults going from inactivity to
activity, flexibility training may offer a good start towards
a healthy lifestyle. This type of training may lack the high
profile of cardiovascular exercise and strength training, but
it can improve range of motion, decrease pain and soreness
after exercise, improve posture, and decrease muscle tension.
More importantly, stretching can make the difference in
comfort when performing tasks such as putting a shirt or
blouse on in the morning or reaching for a cup of tea or
coffee...read more

Sharing Wisdom
|
|
From Gary in CA
I found a wonderful resource for caregiver
supplies...the local marine/boating outlet! Items such as non-slip
cups, plates, non-skid mats, cup holders, and many other aids for
the disabled are available for reasonable prices. The store was a
treasure trove of ideas! A water craft is unstable and virtually
everything has to be safe and secure, just as it is with a
disabled person.
The best ideas and solutions for taking care of your
loved one often come from other caregivers. Please post your ideas
and insights and we will share them with your fellow caregivers.
