Joy Behar is
an American comedian, writer,
actress, and a co-host of the talk
show, The View. For Joy, heart
disease is a family affair. Despite
having lost both parents to heart
disease, Joy’s mother Rose was not
prepared when a sudden heart attack
struck in her fifties. Now, Joy and
her daughter Eve (a talented ceramic
artist) are challenging women who
have or are at risk for heart
disease to be prepared, and better
their odds of surviving should a
heart attack strike without warning.
Gary Barg:
How has heart disease affected your
family?
Joy Behar: I
am the recipient of a gene, I think
possibly, because my mother had her
first heart attack when she was 50
years old. An uncle, who is
her brother, had a sudden heart
attack and died at the age of 58.
Both my grandparents on my mother’s
side died of heart attacks.
So, there you have it. It is
not a pretty picture.
Gary Barg: What
do women need to know about the
risks of having sudden heart attacks
and what should they do if they
think they are experiencing one? ...read more

De-Stigmatizing Urinary Incontinence By Michael Plontz
|
Too often caregivers feel that
their loved one’s incontinence is a natural result
of aging, dementia, medication or disability. They
may not seek help because they assume that nothing
can be done. But that might not be entirely true.
Let’s learn about this too-little-talked-about
condition.
First of all, we need a basic
anatomy lesson. The urinary system contains a
urethra, a bladder, two ureters, and two kidneys. A
circular muscle called the sphincter can play a role
in incontinence, but it is not an official part of
the urinary system...read more

By Beverly Bernstein Joie, MS, CMC
|
For the past several years, my
step-sister had been taking my mom to see the
ophthalmologist. They had their routine; Cindy would
drop her off for the appointment and then pick her up
after it. Then, last spring, Mom called to ask if I
could step in because Cindy was unavailable to help her.
I was actually pleased that I would have the opportunity
to see what the doctor had to say...read more

I have a question and hope someone
will give me a tip. My daughter, an adult in her fifties, is
quadriplegic due to MS. Her caregiver is her husband, who
works from home. As of late, it is getting harder to dress
her. She cannot do this lying down on the bed and
cannot bear any weight. Any ideas out there?
