At Seventeen
Tomorrow marks
the seventeenth anniversary of
Today’s Caregiver magazine and
caregiver.com. It was on a rainy
Fourth of July in 1995 that I
arrived at the printer’s loading
dock with a friend and a rental
truck to start delivering the first
issue of the print publication. I
have to say that we are really
honored and humbled by your
responses to our anniversary… but
really – fireworks and bands on the
National Mall tomorrow…? That is
appreciated, but way overboard.
But seriously,
folks, for our anniversary, I want
to talk about the most important
experts from whom I’ve learned
throughout these years – you. We are
honored by the wisdom shared by the
over 50,000 family caregivers who
have attended a Fearless Caregiver
Conference, as well as the
celebrities who have shared their
personal stories of family
caregiving with our attendees...read more

The phone call came on a misty
Sunday morning. Mary’s mother had fallen at home and

sister were contacted by their elderly father and a
social worker and encouraged to return home to help
their aged parents make medical decisions,
straighten out financial and legal matters, and find
home care services...read more

most people, it poses special problems for people with
dementing illnesses, for example, Alzheimer's disease,
multi-infarct dementia, Parkinson's disease, Pick's
disease, or injury that results in disabling
intellectual impairment...read more

What concerns me most is when my
Alzheimer parent gets "homesick" every single day and then
spends most of the rest of the evening crying. She wants to
go home, but she can't tell me where that is. She lives with
us and has for 11 years. I can't stand the constant crying,
and I can't find what this means in Alzheimer's language and
so I don't know how to stop it or redirect it. Once she gets
there, there's no way to stop her.
