As we stand in the midst of the 2012 holiday season, please allow me to cautiously interject myself into the discussions between primary and long-distance caregivers.

From Sheri in Canada On the talk: My dad’s health (Parkinson’s) deteriorates every time he is hit with a new health issue, and he experiences sundowner's syndrome (eyes wide open - dreams) which is scary for all of us. We had a hard time selling dad on a nursing home even after he went missing outside (in the cold) for a few hours. My life was starting to fall apart, had to quit school, could not work, running out of money, etc. We told dad we would just place him on the list for a facility (used this term rather than nursing home), use it for respite care when we vacation, keep his room just as it is, and nothing would change. In December 2010, he was hospitalized for a heart attack, then acquired pneumonia, and deteriorated rapidly. Fortunately, we were able to get him into a nursing home.  We were told we would need to hire a staff to cover five shifts a week if we took him home. We agreed home care was not only not affordable, but managing the staff and filling in for no-shows and sick days would add to the challenge. (We learned that Dad had turned away some of the workers at times and was alone all day!)  Dad agreed to move into the facility as it would be nicer than the hospital and more reasonable. He is happy in a brand new facility, and only asks to go home when he is confused (thinks he is at the cottage or in the hospital).  From Julie in Washington State My husband has short-term memory loss and gets easily confused. I bought a white board and an easel. I write the day and date at the top, then a brief schedule of the day. It not only helps him, but it helps me as well! The best ideas and solutions for taking care of  your  loved one often come from other caregivers. Please post your ideas and insights and we will share them with your fellow caregivers.
