I've looked at life from both sides now
From up and down, and still somehow
It's life's illusions I recall
I really don't know life at all

As we stand in the midst of the 2012 holiday season, please allow me to cautiously interject myself into the discussions between primary and long-distance caregivers.

Throughout this holiday season, we have been running an educational series called the Caregiver Board of Directors’ Meetings.  This, of course, refers to us being able to take advantage of the time we will be with our fellow adult family members throughout the holidays to conduct meaningful meetings about important topics pertaining to our loved one’s care...read more

The Inconvenience of Incontinence

By Kristine Dwyer, Staff Writer

Just mention the word “incontinence” or “bladder leakage” and watch people react. Most people are reluctant to speak about it and many are afraid to even discuss it with their doctor. Surprisingly, aging alone is not the only cause of bladder leakage or incontinence, as it is commonly known. Actually, it can occur in many age groups and affects men, women and, yes, even caregivers...read more

Nourishing Holidays
By Rita Miller-Huey

Ah, “‘Tis the season….” But for many of us, it is another day of the same old thing, or, maybe worse, it is a time when there are even more expectations and responsibilities placed upon us than we usually face. May be they come from inside, or maybe they are expectations from others, none-the-less, the holiday season can be more burdensome than joyful for many of us...read more

Sharing Wisdom

From Sheri in Canada

On the talk: My dad’s health (Parkinson’s) deteriorates every time he is hit with a new health issue, and he experiences sundowner's syndrome (eyes wide open - dreams) which is scary for all of us. We had a hard time selling dad on a nursing home even after he went missing outside (in the cold) for a few hours. My life was starting to fall apart, had to quit school, could not work, running out of money, etc. We told dad we would just place him on the list for a facility (used this term rather than nursing home), use it for respite care when we vacation, keep his room just as it is, and nothing would change.

In December 2010, he was hospitalized for a heart attack, then acquired pneumonia, and deteriorated rapidly. Fortunately, we were able to get him into a nursing home.  We were told we would need to hire a staff to cover five shifts a week if we took him home. We agreed home care was not only not affordable, but managing the staff and filling in for no-shows and sick days would add to the challenge. (We learned that Dad had turned away some of the workers at times and was alone all day!)  Dad agreed to move into the facility as it would be nicer than the hospital and more reasonable. He is happy in a brand new facility, and only asks to go home when he is confused (thinks he is at the cottage or in the hospital).

From Julie in Washington State

My husband has short-term memory loss and gets easily confused. I bought a white board and an easel. I write the day and date at the top, then a brief schedule of the day. It not only helps him, but it helps me as well!
