As a wise person once stated, there are “lies, damned lies, and statistics.” For example, when we started hosting conferences in 1998, three years after both Today’s Caregiver magazine and caregiver.com were launched, the statistics would have suggested that only around 20 percent of our 350 attendees would be male caregivers.  Yet, as we walked around the conference hall, by our rough estimates, at least 40 percent of the caregivers in attendance were men.  And a few years later, freshly minted statistics stated that, lo and behold, the percentage of male caregivers was around 45 percent...read more

Finding Balance for the Caregiver:
16 Stress Reducing Strategies
By Lisa Bailey

From Lilly in CA
I had an elderly client in her 90s who refused to wear a hearing aid. Many of the family members encouraged her to get fitted for one. Finally, one of her daughters said, “Mom, what if I fell down or had an accident in the house and was calling you for help? You wouldn't be able to hear me.” That's all it took for her to get a hearing aid.
From Patsy in FL
After his diagnosis, I did nothing for myself for over three years, resulting in anger and sadness. I took one small step by going to a support group meeting. Then I took another small step, writing again after a decade. Slowly, my steps have led me to several "old loves" (dancing, singing and more). I urge any caregiver to look to his or her own interests (often what gave you joy when younger) and start slowly. Each step builds confidence to take the next one.

The best ideas and solutions for taking care of  your  loved one often come from other caregivers.  Please post your ideas and insights and we will share them with your fellow caregivers.
