Sharing Wisdom

A caregiver from the Florida Keys

My greatest tool has always been empathy; regardless if it was for humans or animals. When a friend asked me to help out with her 92-year- old mother, I was happy to. Nothing prepared me for the dementia, anger and distrust that are normal for people with Alzheimerís. My tip is educate yourself and learn how to interact with the person by relating to their perspective. As far as incontinence, after a visit to the doctor to rule out a medical issue, I increased fluids and bathroom visits to every two to four hours. People make the mistake of reducing fluids, but that just makes things worst. If you have an abusive client or loved one, learn to prevent conflict before it starts by not contradicting them and keeping the conversation neutral.

From Michelle in NJ

In reference to the bathing situation, I hung a calendar in my aunt's bedroom and I write the word BATH on the days she takes a bath. So far, I have been able to point this out to her and show her the last time she took a bath. It has helped her see it for herself. GOOD LUCK!
