The Addict at the Table

Last week, I attended my fifteenth conference hosted by the American Society on Aging. This year’s Aging in America’s event drew nearly 3,000 professional care advocates from government, community and the business spheres of influence.  The buzz at the event was about how to support the work of family caregivers around the nation. (Yea!)  This is a trend I have seen spanning the two centuries I have been attending the event.

I remember leafing through the first conference program at the 1997 event, searching for at least one session with caregiver in the title, to no avail. Over the past decade, however, the conference program has grown in size many-fold...continued

From Lisa in Newport News
If (like me) you've had scary moments when the wheelchair you are pushing is going too fast for comfort, you may want to consider adding hand brakes to it. I couldn't afford a brand new chair with brakes already included, but I did find a local bike shop that installed bicycle-type brakes. And they have been life changing for me. Not only do I feel that I'm more in control of the wheelchair going up or down steep ramps, but I can stop on a dime when needed.

From Diane in Pennsylvania
I am the caregiver for my male companion of 14 years. He suffers from pulmonary hypertension, COPD/emphysema and several heart issues. I keep a running list in an envelope on our fridge with a list of all meds, doses, what they are for, along with all doctors’ names and phone numbers, family names/phone numbers and a copy of "designation of healthcare surrogate.” I also keep this list in the "notes" on my cell phone. In case of an emergency, they are easy to access.
