Eric J. Hall is the president and
founding chief executive officer of the
Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA),
headquartered in New York City. Mr. Hall
spearheaded the development of AFA, a
national nonprofit organization, to
improve the quality of care for
individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and
related dementias and so that
organizations from coast-to-coast could
speak as one voice to advocate for
optimal care and to enhance local
support services. Under Mr. Hall’s
vision and leadership, AFA unites more
than 1,600 member organizations and
associate member organizations in the
United States. Editor-in-Chief Gary Barg recently spoke
with him about his work with the
foundation. Gary Barg:
What is the mission of the
Alzheimer’s Foundation of America? Eric Hall:
At the time that I established the
Alzheimer’s Foundation of America
back in February of 2002, there was
an enormous amount of discussion
around a cure for Alzheimer’s
disease and I, like everyone else,
hope that there is a cure; that
there is something that is
disease-modifying that comes down
the pike which will make Alzheimer’s
disease a non-issue...continued Gary Barg
Holiday, Gifts and Stress Even if you’re not a caregiver,
the threat of the holidays being right around the
corner strikes instant fear, terror and major stress
into the hearts of almost everyone. However, there
is hope for caregivers to enjoy the holiday season
and still make it a special time for their loved one
as well. The key is to pace yourself, as well as to
help your loved one do the same,...continued
Sometimes we can look to our past to learn how to find the balance we
seek in our present lives. Our memories should be treasured and also
viewed as shaping and touching our lives today. Mimi was my great-grandmother. She lived with my
family until I was in the third grade. Mimi would get me off the bus
from kindergarten and prepare my lunch for me...continued It is universally recognized that
elderly people with dementia lose their short term
memory first and their long term memory last. For
example, they often remember people and events from
their earlier years, but have difficulty remembering
what they ate for breakfast the day before...continued Help! My mom has lived with me for eight years. She has
"severe dementia" now. In the past three weeks, she has
started going to the bathroom (urinating and bowel moving)
at least 25 times a day. She has a lot of bowel accidents
and it makes a huge mess several times a day. We use
incontinence underwear. Mom is blind in one eye and can't
see well in the other eye. She can't hear well, but can
hear. We have to scrub her hands with a brush after every
bowel movement if she gets there before I do. I AM
COMPLETELY WORN OUT. Is it normal for "severe dementia"
patients to go to the bathroom 25 times a day?
