Gary Barg - Editor-in-chiefAn Interview with Marlo Thomas

In 1996, she was awarded the Women in Film Lucy Award in recognition of her excellence and innovation in her creative works that have enhanced the perception of women through the medium of television. This holiday season marks the seventh year of the Thanks and Giving campaign when shoppers, celebrities and national corporate partners unite to help St. Jude fight childhood cancer.

Editor-In-Chief Gary Barg sits down with Marlo to talk about family, supporting children and giving back.

Gary Barg: Tell me a bit about the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and the Thanks and Giving campaign.

Marlo Thomas: One of the reasons that St. Jude is so distinctive is that it is a research and treatment center under one roof. When my father was first planning on building a hospital for children with cancer and other deadly diseases, one of the scientists said, “If you really want to help sick kids, Danny, don’t just try to make kids better; try to find out what makes them sick.” That became the mission of the hospital, devoted to the study of disease in children...continued

Surviving The Holidays
By Jennifer Kay, L.C.S.W.
Holidays and special occasions can bring out the best and the worst in us. The prospect of wonderful, happy times abound, filling us with somewhat unrealistic hopes for our relationships. We are often disappointed by how these special occasions turn out. Add to the normal tensions of holidays, the image of someone you love being ill or incapacitated, and you have the makings of very difficult times...continued

Taking Care
By  LeAnn Thieman

Terry stacks the breakfast dishes into the sink, hands the freshly-packed lunchboxes to her son and daughter, bundles them into their coats and boots and hustles them to the school bus. With a smile and a wave she promises, “I’ll pick you up after school. We’ll make Christmas cookies for your Girl Scout meeting, then go to your basketball game...continued

Carenotes

I am a single mom to my 10-year-old son and sole caregiver to my 88-year-old mother, who has dementia and several physical disabilities.  She has lived with me for four years and there is no outside help at this time. I feel alone since I do not have a support system. My family lives several states away. What do I need to know in order to help myself and son through this process? I need support more than my son as he has friends and activities with which to refresh himself.

Suggestions and directions for helping me keep a strong positive attitude and fighting the feeling that I am disappearing/evaporating/melting would be greatly appreciated.
