The Self-Care Equation

I am working on a mathematical equation that has me flummoxed.  I want to find the solution for the relationship between the melting away of stress from caregivers who joined us on the Fearless Caregiver Conference at Sea last week and the increase in pounds as we all hit the buffet tables.  As they boarded the ship, I heard from at least four caregivers concerning how guilty they felt about getting away. Yet when they were preparing to leave at the end of the trip, they were developing plans to add some much deserved respite to their schedule once they returned home.  The cruise was relaxing, educational, invigorating and even exhilarating (the zip-lining in Honduras); but it was much more than that. For many of the cruisers, it was the first time that they had been able to truly marshal all of their resources to make sure that their loved ones were cared for at home during the few days they were away.  At the same time, they were finely able to fully appreciate the value of self-care as a vital part of caring for their loved ones...continued

Technology Long Distance

By Jennifer Bradley, Staff Writer

Technology is continually evolving, improving and keeping in step with fast-paced Americans. This is encouraging news for those caring for loved ones from afar. Approximately five to seven million people are long-distance caregivers for their senior relatives, and experts say the number will double within 15 years. In a report by Lazelle E. Benefield and Cornelia Beck at the College of Nursing, University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, it states that long-distance caregivers live, on average, 450 miles from their loved one and travel seven hours to reach them...continued

Giving It All Away - A Caregiver's Dilemma

By Jose Fox

Today, approximately 65 million people provide care for a chronically ill, disabled or aged family member or friend. And too often, I’ve seen some of the most dedicated family caregivers wear themselves down to the point where they have nothing left to give, and nothing left to plan for their own eventual long-term care needs...continued

Attacking Accidental Overdoses
By Gary Barg, Editor-in-Chief

A growing concern for family caregivers is the possibility of a loved one’s accidental overdose. This is an issue I hear about with alarming frequency as we travel the country on our Fearless Caregiver Conference tour. If nothing else, the statistics bear out the potential for danger to our loved ones...continued

Carenotes

Hi,

I looked for a support group some time ago, but all the ones close to me were specifically for people with elderly parents with some specific disease.  Maybe that is due to the fact that most of them are run by elderly care facilities.  It doesn't help me because my mom is a relatively healthy 86-year-old; I take care of her because she does not drive anymore.  What if I started my own support group for people with elderly parents (with a non-specific category) here?  Do you have any tips on how I could go about doing that?  I am in Wayne County, Michigan.  Thanks for any and all help you can give me or direct me to.
