Leaving Las Vegas

Last week, I went to Las Vegas and was knocked out.  No, I haven’t started a new career as a sparring partner to Manny Pacquiao.  I was there to attend the Silvers Summit portion of the annual Consumer Electronics Show. It is gratifying to see that we caregivers are finally getting a lot of (and I must say) much deserved attention from the electronics industry. Look for some nifty innovations in everything from fall prevention to memory enhancement programs, and even products to help us hear better as we age. I was also at the Silvers Summit to moderate a pretty impressive panel of consumer product experts for a session on Exceptional Customer Service, and I couldn’t think of a better topic to address.

In 2001, we created the annual Caregiver Friendly Awards to celebrate products, services, media and books which have the best interest of the family caregiver in mind.  One of our very first winners did not necessarily win for any advanced technology, but the judges thought their commitment to customer service was specifically outstanding...continued

Telehealth Brings New Privacy Concerns

By Sandra Ray, Staff Writer

Telehealth systems are gaining popularity with older adults with chronic illnesses who desire to stay at home as long as possible rather than rely on long-term care options outside the home. Even though older adults tend to be more tentative with new technology, some are accepting the monitoring systems as a way of staying independent in their homes. ...continued

The Bounds of Friendship

By Lori Parks

I remember when she told me. I was sitting at my desk on a humid August afternoon, sifting through the avalanche of paperwork that accompanies a real estate closing. I took her call, grateful for the break, chirped “Hi” and waited for the bright, familiar voice. She said, after a round of polite how are yous, “My doctor thinks I may have cancer.”...continued

Top Ten Things For Caregivers To Start Doing
for the New Year

1. Keep records of all medications and reactions: make notes about what works, what doesn’t and when you informed the physician of any problems.

2. Keep records of all doctor appointments: the reason for the visit, the doctor’s responses to our concerns, any procedures performed, etc...continued

Carenotes

Hello,

I am 56 years old and unable to work because I am the primary caregiver for my 80-year-old mother, who is blind and has had her colon removed. She wears a pouch, which must be emptied every one to two hours; she is unable to maintain this device herself.  I do all the shopping, cooking, cleaning, and everything else necessary to run her home.

Are there any programs to pay me, her only caregiver, some kind of income?  She receives less than $20,000 dollars a year and we barely make ends meet. If you could point me in the right direction,  I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you,
B
