Gary Barg:
What is the most important piece of
advice you have for a family
caregiver?
Valerie Harper:
Take the opportunity to
tell them you love them [laugh],
however that manifests itself. And
if you don’t think you do, find a
way to show it. “I just always loved
you in red.” Whatever. And I guess
listen; like in life, listen, and
respect them even if they’re not
making sense. Keep respect for their
humanity in the room. And don’t get
into old patterns if you can. Try to
communicate in a new and supportive
way. And keep the question in front
of you: “How can I help in this
moment?” Just in this moment, not
forever. I guess that’s it.
