The Jaime Estremera-Fitzgerald Interview (Page 2 of 2)

An Interview with Jaime Estremera-Fitzgerald
Chief Executive Officer - Your Aging Resource Center
Palm Beach/Treasure Coast, Florida

Gary Barg: You know, weíre always proud to partner with you and your team at our Fearless Caregiver Conferences in all of your communities. Why do you think itís important for caregivers to spend time around one another and not isolate themselves?

Jaime Estremera-Fitzgerald: Because weíre all social beings, first of all, and not one of us can be an island by ourselves. Having been a caregiver for the last 20 years, actively a caregiver, first for my mother until she was 99 and passed and now for my father who lived with me for eight years and now is in a small assisted living here in West Palm Beach, the most important thing is to recognize that you need othersí energy.

You need othersí stories to encourage you, to help you not feel alone, not get depressed. We donít only need caregiver education, which you provide incredibly well through the conferences that you do and the interaction of people knowing there are others that feel as they do. But also I believe that one of the biggest things that is needed in America today, and we as an organization over the next coming months are going to be putting a lot of emphasis on, is to provide programs that give respite to caregivers. Secondly, we need to provide additional resources to help them with the task of caregiving.  That is so, so critical.
